How to Get Affordable Automobile Insurance in Florida

The state of Florida has a computer system that alerts it any time an automobile insurance policy is canceled for any reason. If new insurance isn’t purchased almost immediately, the state can revoke your registration tags and not renew your tags until it receives proof that your vehicle has insurance.

In other words, the state of Florida is serious about not letting people drive without insurance – and if you are caught driving without insurance, the penalties are severe. They may make being allowed to drive in the future more difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. That’s why so many drivers are eager to learn as many ways as possible to get affordable automobile insurance in Florida. Luckily, almost everyone can do several things to keep their rates low or reduce their rates below what they are currently paying.

If you consider purchasing a new car, you may want to consult your automobile insurance agent before you drive it off the lot. Some new cars cost a lot more to insure than others – your choice of make and model can make a big difference in how much your pay each month for your automobile insurance. The way you drive also affects how much you pay for your insurance. If you drive safely and legally, you are likely to pay a lot less for your automobile insurance than someone who gets speeding tickets or any other moving violation.

And if you are convicted of a DUI or a DWI, then you can forget to find a decent rate on your automobile insurance for up to 3 years. If you are convicted of a second DUI or DWI offense, you will be forced to get insurance from the high-risk pool at prices that will make your head swim! If you’re an older driver, say 55 or older, you may be able to shave at least 10% off your monthly premium simply by taking a driver’s refresher course. Not all insurance companies offer this discount, so check with your agent to see if you can qualify.

Younger drivers, those under 25, are automatically placed in a high-risk category. You can cut about 5% from your monthly insurance bill if you stay in school and maintain at least a “B” grade average, qualifying for a Good Student Discount. If you garage your car at night rather than leave it parked on the street, you qualify for a discount. Do you have other types of insurance, say homeowners or health insurance, from the same insurance company? If so, you should qualify for a Multi-Policy Discount.

Have you been with the same company for at least 5 years? Then you should ask if you qualify for a Long-Time-Customer Discount. How many miles do you drive in an average month? If your answer is fewer than 500, you may qualify for a rather hefty Low Mileage Discount. Ask your agent. Is your car an older model?

If your car is old enough or battered enough that it no longer has any Kelly Blue Book value, then you’re probably just throwing away any money you are spending on collision or comprehensive premiums. Ask your agent exactly how much your insurance company will pay for your vehicle if it needs repair or replacement after an accident and then make a determination whether collision and comprehensive still make sense for you.

How much of a deductible can you afford. This is a serious question, because the higher your deductible the lower your monthly automobile insurance premium will be – but also the more cash you will have to come up with out of your own pocket if you make a claim. So weigh everything carefully – how much you can actually afford to pay for your own accident, and how much you can afford to pay each month for your automobile insurance.

O.K. Now you’ve got all the information you need to put together an automobile insurance policy that you can afford. Keeping everything you’ve learned in this article in mind, it’s time for you to get online and start comparing prices among the different automobile insurance companies operating in Florida.

Take the extra time to make your comparisons on at least 3 different websites since no one website compares all of the different insurance companies in Florida. Once you have made all the necessary comparisons then you should be able to grab the lowest price and sleep easy from then on, knowing that you have gotten the most affordable automobile insurance in Florida.
